Laura Cruz graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at
the University of Toronto. She initially practised Family Medicine. In 1996
she earned her Diploma of Sport Medicine and began devoting an increasing
amount of her professional and volunteer energies to sport. Her
Sport Medicine interests include physical activity promotion, injury
prevention and active women. Laura has been a volunteer and advisor for more than a
decade with Rhythmic Gymnastics Canada, Gymnastics Ontario and more
recently with Skate Canada. She has had the honour of travelling to
several international competitions with both sports as the Canadian Team
Physician and was the National Team physician for Rhythmic
Gymnastics. Laura also works with runners, and hockey and soccer players
of recreational to international competition caliber.
She is involved with various committees of the Canadian Academy of Sport
Medicine- National Team Physician Committee, Women's Issues in Sport,
and Dance Medicine Special Interest Group. She was a contributing author
for "Childhood
Fitness" position paper and the CASM curriculum study guide.
Laura studied classical ballet for 15 years, and was
examined in and taught Cecchetti method for five. She also competed in
track and field, cross country running and played on the U of
T Faculty of Medicine women's soccer team.
Laura is the past Medical Director
of the Olympic High Performance Training Centre in North York, a Sport
Medicine Physician and Research Director at SportCARE, Sunnybrook and Women's College Health
Sciences Centre and a co- owner of Pivot Sport Medicine and Orthopaedics.
Laura is a Lecturer with the University of Toronto and received a 2005
"Teacher of the Year" award from St. Joseph's Health Centre Family
Medicine residents.
