Massage Therapy

Benefits of Massage

Massage therapy is the manipulation of the soft tissues of the body to gain a therapeutic response. It provides a holistic approach to treating dysfunction in the body by affecting the circulatory, muscular, connective tissue, lymphatic, immune and nervous systems. Massage therapy is also beneficial in a variety of musculoskeletal disorders.

Massage therapy is an effective treatment for:

  • Low back pain
  • Neck and shoulder tension/pain
  • Sprains, strains and muscle spasms
  • Migraines and headaches
  • Discomfort due to pregnancy
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Sport injuries (e.g., iliotibial band friction syndrome, tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, frozen shoulder, plantar fasciitis, etc.)

What to expect on your first visit

You will be asked to fill out a confidential health history form specific to massage therapy. This will enable the therapist to complete an assessment and develop a treatment plan based on your individual needs. Try to arrive at least 10 minutes prior to your treatment time. If you are late you may not receive your full treatment time.

Treatment

Your massage will take place in a private room where you and the therapist will work together for the session. Prior to the treatment an interview and assessment will be done as part of the treatment. It is essential to communicate during the treatment about any soreness, numbness or tingling you may be experiencing. Your comfort level and safety are a primary concern.

Payment for Massage therapy

Massage Therapy is not covered by OHIP. However most extended health insurance plans provide partial or full coverage. This usually requires a referral from a physician. It is your responsibility to call your health provider to find out how much coverage you have. You may also be able to save your receipts and apply them towards your tax return as a medical expense.
