Exercise Therapy

Exercising is a way to re-centre your body following injury or when diagnosed with arthritis or other muscle/ joint problem. Current therapy models all include exercises to help restore full function and strength of the affected joint or muscle or body region.

Exercise is an important aspect of general health and has been shown to improve mood, heart health and diabetes control. Exercise also reduces the risk of some cancers, osteoporosis and prevents obesity. Recent studies have shown that breast cancer patients experience fewer chemotherapy side effects when exercising and receiving restorative therapy such as massage therapy.

At Pivot, our Sport Medicine Physicians and Practitioners/Therapists prescribe different types of exercises. Some are remedial, designed to improve flexibility and posture and strength. Others are focused on restoring natural muscle use patterns, or to better manage uncomfortable or painful symptoms.

Examples or remedial exercises include stretching for tight calf muscles in runners; rotator cuff theraband exercises for those with tendonitis or thigh and trunk strengthening for someone with Osteoarthritis of the knee.

Other exercise therapy includes Pilates, and Feldenkrais, therapies designed by Joseph Pilates and Moshe Feldenkrais respectively, to restore strength and function in comprehensive and holistic fashion. Practitioners of Pilates and Feldenkrais are certified and registered in these techniques.

Athletic Therapists are able to prescribe fitness programmes and performance enhancement programmes as well as remedial exercises and other aspects in injury care.
